Overview

Terahertz (THz) science and technologies have rapidly advanced in recent years, attracting attention owing to its wide array of applications in THz spectroscopy of materials, THz sensing, non-destructive evaluation of industrial products, and 6G wireless communications. The Molecular Photoscience Research Center, Kobe University and Research Center for Development of Far-Infrared Region, University of Fukui, have both been working on the development of THz science and technology for more than sixteen years, servings as Centers of Excellence in this field. In the Philippine setting, pioneering THz-related research activities have commenced in the University of the Philippines (Diliman and Los Baños) and in De La Salle University, while maintaining close collaboration with these Japanese institutes. The collaboration has been strengthened by the Bilateral Joint Research Project (FY2018-2019) and recently by the Core-to-Core Program, a multi-lateral international collaborative program, funded by Japan Society for the Promotion of Science (JSPS) and its counterpart funding agencies in the Asian participant countries of the program, including Department of Science and Technology, Philippines.

The Philippines - Japan Terahertz Research Workshop (PJTW or JPTW) [note] was organized to provide a venue for academic exchange between this collaborative community of Japanese and Philippines Institutes. The first PJTW was held in the Science and Technology Complex of De La Salle University from February 20 to 24 in 2017 (PJTW 2017), and the second JPTW was held in Research Center for Development of Far-Infrared Region, University of Fukui, from June 14 to 16 in 2019. The aim of this workshop is to promote THz science and technology as a viable research area and to encourage young researchers and students to participate and present their works.

We are happy to announce the third Philippines - Japan Terahertz Research Workshop to be held in the University of Philippines Diliman from July 16 to 17, 2023. Originally, the third PJTW was expected to be held in 2021. However, we had to wait until the situation of COVID-19 gets good enough to have this kind of international workshop and get together. We hope that this small workshop will further strengthen the ties between the THz research communities of Japan and the Philippines.
